Govt should abolish VAT on diesel, petrol: Congress #IndiaNEWS #Goa News
Panaji: The Congress party, on Sunday, demanded that till the economy returns to normal, Goa government should abolish VAT on diesel and petrol, and added that presently, VAT on petrol is 25 per cent while on diesel it is 22 per cent in the state.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, president Girish Chodankar, in a press note issued here stated that when the state is struggling to revive its economy and when diesel price has cascading effect on the economy, Chief Minister could have avoided the increase in prices soon after the central government raised excise duties by Rs 10 per litre on petrol and Rs 13 per litre on diesel.
He said that the state economy is at all time low, and added that petrol consumption is down by 75 per cent and diesel by 60 per cent in the state, and questioned as to how an increase in VAT can increase government revenue when consumption of petroleum products is down.
Practically, the government should have encouraged consumption of diesel for the purpose of transportation of people, goods, and raw materials, he said.
He reminded the BJP government that the party had promised in its manifesto to freeze petrol price at Rs 60 by abolishing VAT.
He also said that “in global market, oil basket for Indian oil companies is 23.38 UD dollars per barrel that is Rs 1,772 per barrel. We all know that one barrel has 159 litres that means the cost per litre today is Rs 11.14 per litre and selling price of petrol is Rs 68.32 per litre and diesel is Rs 64.87 per litre in Goa.
