Kesinga: Army officer Major Amit Sahu, a resident of Balsi village under Kesinga block in Kalahandi district, has set an example for others by marrying Megha Sahu in a refreshing and unique manner. The army officer did not take any dowry. He insisted that he will only accept a saree, bangles (sankha) and vermillion (sindoor) to complete the marriage rituals. Now he is earning accolades from all sections of the society for his noble need.
Amit’s father Kshamasagar Sahu is a retired Subedar of Indian Army. Amit, the eldest son born in 1992, came out as topper in Class X from Army Public School in Chandigarh. He was also topper in the Class XII exams. Then he underwent training for three years at the Pune-based National Defense Academy and for one year at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. After completion of his training, he was first posted at Siachen in Jammu and Kashmir as a Major. He is currently serving at the Five Medium Rifle Battalion in Aurangabad.
Amit married Megha, February 16. She is the daughter of police personnel Jagdish Sahu, a resident of Bhawanipatna. Even though, Jagdish wanted to give some essential items to his daughter as a token of love, Amit turned his requests down. He said he would accept his would be bride with a saree, a set of bangles and a casket full of vermillion.
The marriage has become an eye-opener in the locality. Local residents are heaping praise on Amit for going against the practice of dowry. “At a time when we hear cases where daughters-in-law are being killed as their parents fail to meet the dowry demands, Amit has set an example for others. If all will follow Amit’s footsteps, there would be no dowry deaths in our society, they observed.
