Chandigarh: 07th September 2020: The very first International Day of Clean Air for blue skies is being celebrated throughout the world today on September 7th, 2020.
The Day aims to:
*Raise public awareness at all levels—individual, community, corporate and government—that clean air is important for health, productivity, the economy and the environment.
*Promote and facilitate solutions that improve air quality by sharing actionable knowledge best practices, innovations, and success stories.
*Bring together diverse international actors working on this topic to form a strategic alliance to gain momentum for concerted national, regional and international approaches for effective air quality management.
Government of India has already taken an initiative in this regard by flagging of a national programme called as National Clean Air Programme with an aim to reduce the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 to 20-30% by 2024. City specific action plans were formulated for 102 non-attainment cities under NCAP. Chandigarh being non attainment city (because of higher values of suspended particles in the ambient air) had also submitted its action plan to the Central Pollution Control Board.
Chandigarh has also taken good initiatives to improve air quality of the city such as:-
*Construction of approximately 200 Kms. Cycles Tracks
*Road Cleaning and Road sweeping with automated machines
*Setting up of Construction and Waste Processing unit to produce recycled sand and aggregates
*Maximise Coverage of LPG/PNG for Domestic and Commercial purpose
*Dissemination of Air Quality Index (AQI) to the general public
*Implementation of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Chandigarh
*Greening activities are being taken up as priority works with little paving works wherever possible.
On this International Day of Clean Air for Blues Skies all the residents of this city beautiful must take pledge to contribute their share to clean our air so that the desired goal can be easily achieved and will gift our progeny with beautiful Blue Sky.
