Panaji: With one week into the lockdown, the state witnessed almost zero per cent crime rate except for cases pertaining to violation of lockdown. Apart from that in the last one week, there were no fatal accidents, police said.
The reasons are attributed to the lockdown and the police
presence at various locations in the state.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Parmaditya said, “Since
lockdown period, the crime rate is almost zero per cent while during this time,
no fatal accidents were reported in the state.
He further said, “There is lockdown and police presence
at various locations throughout the state and people are staying indoors. As
such there are (lesser movements of vehicles and) no fatal accidents reported
and also the crime rate is almost zero per cent.
Parmaditya informed that the police across the state have
been facilitating distribution of grocery items, vegetables and other aspects
wherein help is provided to senior citizens, foreign nationals as well as
general public whenever required. He urged public to stay indoors and obey the
government’s orders in view of lockdown.
Since Wednesday last week, around 1606 violations
pertaining to lockdown have been reported in the state wherein 108 FIRs have
been registered and 144 persons have been arrested and 67 vehicles have
been impounded.
Police said that these cases are pertaining to
unnecessary movements of persons, transportation, shops allegedly kept open and
so on. The state is under lockdown from March 24 midnight
banning people movement in an effort to tackle coronavirus disease (COVID- 19).
The police have warned that
people violating the government orders on lockdown will be
arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The police had issued
advisory requesting the people to stay indoors.
