Army fitness criteria for women ‘arbitrary’, says SC, orders permanent commission for those excluded #IndiaNEWS
The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the Centre to allow permanent commission in the Indian Army to women officers who were excluded on the grounds of fitness, Bar and Bench reported. The court observed that the evaluation criteria adopted by the Army for granting them permanent commission was “arbitrary and irrational???, according to Live Law.The court also directed the Army to reconsider the pleas of nearly 650 women officers within a month, in accordance with Thursday’s order, Live Law reported.A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah gave the judgement on a batch of petitions filed by 60 women officers who have alleged that they were denied permanent commission in the Army on grounds of fitness.The court took note of the fact that the fitness standards, known as Shape 1 criteria, were applicable to male officers when they were granted permanent commission in the early years of service.
